Have you ever felt that the path you want to take sounds too big, too unrealistic, maybe even crazy?
I have always believed that choosing the path you want is far better than living with regret. The guilt of “what if I had done this” stays forever.
Today, that belief defines me.

Hi, I am Ananya Das, a Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Undergraduate Scholar 2026, selected through the Embassy Track. I am from West Bengal, India. I secured admission to Seoul National University, which is the number one university in South Korea and consistently placed among the top 50 universities globally, where I will be pursuing Electrical Engineering on a fully funded scholarship.
And before you imagine this story belongs to someone from a major metropolitan city or from elite schooling, let me pause you there.
I am not from a big city.
And no one around me had ever walked this international path before.
The Race Against Time
My journey did not begin with years of preparation, fluent Korean knowledge, or a perfectly designed roadmap.
It began at the end of my senior high school year, with barely six or seven months left and board exams upcoming. I decided not to take a gap year.
Most students who apply for such prestigious scholarships prepare for years. They plan long in advance. I had none of that.
In fact, as a consistent school topper, everyone expected me to follow the traditional engineering or medical route. So the reactions were almost identical: “What are you doing? This is too late. This is unrealistic.” And here was me aiming for not only the scholarship but one of the best universities in this world.
That was the hardest part. That tested me more than any exam ever could.

Strategy and Execution
But at that time, I had only two things to completely rely on.
The first was my belief in myself and second was my skill.
In India, extracurriculars are often neglected. For a scholarship like this, you need clarity, direction, and alignment with your major. I spent countless hours analyzing the scholarship structure, understanding the competition level, studying profiles, and identifying exactly where I stood. I knew my profile was almost strong. But I also knew I was late. So instead of panicking, I strategized.
Execution was never my weakness. If something is in my plan and I have committed to it, I will finish it. Execution over excuses has always been my belief.
The months that followed were intense. I balanced board exams with scholarship preparation. There were nights I stayed awake until 4 a.m. But strangely, it never felt painful. When you love the dream, the grind feels pleasant. And I managed to balance both greatly. The Mental Battle and The Result
But the real battle was about mental strength.
Self-doubt. The pressure of dreaming too big with too little time. The whispers that maybe others were right. Managing mental health while holding onto a vision that others doubted was the hardest part. But every time doubt appeared, I reminded myself: If I don’t believe this is possible, how can I expect it to happen? I realized something powerful: the first support you need is not from the world. It is from yourself.
The day the interview results were released felt unreal, overwhelming happiness and relief. Everything people said was “not possible” vanished in seconds.
There is a unique kind of happiness when something you believed in quietly gets proven right in front of the people who doubted it. I don’t think there is a prouder moment than that. All the stubborn decisions. It was worth it.
The Biggest Lesson
But beyond that, what this journey truly gave me was something deeper, unshakable self-belief.
Looking back, the biggest lesson was not about strategy or preparation. It was about believing in yourself when no one else does. Choosing your path over the one others design for you. Taking control of your own narrative. The maximum that can happen is failure. But that is still better than regret.
As I prepare to step into this new chapter in South Korea, this is only the beginning. My goal is simple, a stronger, wiser, better version of myself every single day and figuring out my own path. Growing while challenging my comfort zone.
There comes, “So Ananya, what’s next?”
